Questions About Cerritos and Los Cabos
The best months to visit Cerritos, Mexico, are typically from November to April, when the weather is particularly pleasant with mild temperatures and minimal rainfall. This period is ideal for beach activities, surfing, and exploring the area. From November to February, you can enjoy cooler temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities, while March and April offer warmer weather with excellent conditions for surfing and swimming.
It’s important to mention that the weather in Cerritos is generally great year-round due to its location on the Pacific side. The area benefits from a consistent, refreshing breeze that keeps conditions comfortable. However, the only two months where you might experience a bit more heat are August and September.
The Mexican Peso and the US Dollar are accepted everywhere. You will get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate between the two currencies varies daily but some places have a set rate posted. We recommend you do carry some Mexico Pesos with you as there are still business, kiosks and market stands that do not take cards, especially in the towns in and around Cerritos.
ATM machines can be found at the airport. We have 2 major Mexican banks in Todos Santos with ATM machines. Most ATM machines dispense Mexican Pesos unless otherwise marked. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate and non-bank ATMs will charge higher fees.
All major credit cards are accepted at most stores and restaurants – VISA and MasterCard are the most widely accepted. American Express is accepted in some stores and restaurants, but VISA and MasterCard are preferred. And don’t forget your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
Cerritos Beach is about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the airport, 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, 8 minutes from El Pescadero, and 15 minutes from Todos Santos. The roads are generally narrower than in the U.S. or Canada but are safe, with a four-lane highway from the airport to Todos Santos. Cerritos is located just past km 65, and once you turn off, you’ll encounter dirt roads. Driving here requires caution, especially at night due to wandering livestock.
A toll road from the airport to the Cerritos highway bypasses city traffic, costing around 100 pesos one way. In Mexico, speed bumps (topes) are common, and in beach towns like Cerritos, they may be unmarked.
Most major gas stations accept debit or credit cards, but cash (USD or Pesos) is always accepted. Tipping 10 pesos is customary. Gasoline types include Magna (regular) and Lleno (premium). No special licenses are needed to drive; just bring a valid driver’s license from your country.
We do recommend you rent a car. There are so many amazing places to see, restaurants to try and experiences to have that you will want to have a car. You can rent a car at the Los Cabo Airport (SJD) airport from many of the international car rental agencies, or you can have a car delivered directly to the Cove from Todos Santo or take private transportation to and from the airport.
When renting a car, please know there is a mandatory Mexican Liability Insurance that all Mexican car rental agency must apply to your rental by law. So, expect the checkout price to be higher than the advertised price in most situations.
You can also hire the private car transportation companies for drive and guide day tours or hire them to drive you around Cerritos and its neighborhoods, maybe even take you to an off the beaten path restaurant for an evening of sunsets and cocktails.
Here are a few cars rental and private transport company’s options:
TS Private Transportation
Omega Car Rentals in Todos Santos
Cactus Car Rental
There is also the option of taking a shuttle service through Baja Eco Tours .They run a shuttle from Los Cabos Airport (SJD) to Todos Santos. It’s on a small 7-10 passenger van. Round trip is about $35 USD. You can take a taxi from Todos Santos or ask them to drop you off at their terminal in Pescadero, across from the Pemex, and take a taxi from there.
Google Maps will bring you right to us at The Cove at Cerritos! Please make sure the app is in your phone before leaving home.
We recommend all travelers purchase travel insurance before leaving their home country. There is only one H+ hospital in San Jose del Cabo that provides full medical service based upon US health care standards.
In Todos Santos, there is the Saint Jude’s Medical Centre. They offer full medical and emergency services around the clock every day of the year. They have a certified ambulance in town which is fully equipped and operated by qualified paramedics.
Saint Jude’s Medical Centre in Todos Santos is the only facility in town that takes most international insurances and can find out if yours would cover your needs in minutes. They also work with a network of major hospitals in Cabos San Lucas and La Paz. Their staff speaks English and have the US itemized CPT billing system in case you need it for your insurance. In most cases, you will be expected to pay for any treatment incurred before leaving the hospital and can then file a claim with your insurance provider.
Regarding tipping, it is highly appreciated in general in Mexico. It is your choice, but please know that your generosity is deeply appreciated, not only at eating and drinking places but most service staff greatly appreciate the kind gesture.
Many employees rely on tips as their main source of income, as salaries are typically very low compared to the US and Canada.
