Questions About Cerritos and Los Cabos

Cerritos town is safe. There is no significant history of break-ins, and you can safely walk at night. We still recommend locking your car doors at night and of course you will always lock your condo and front gate behind you.

Playa Los Cerritos is the only swimmable beach on the pacific side. Still, you need to use caution. There is a lifeguard on duty most of the days. We have a small, beautiful beach right in front of the Cove, but it is not recommended to swim from due to breaks and riptides. But it is the perfect place to enjoy your holiday read or a glass or two of your favorite libations!

The Mexican Peso and the US Dollar are accepted everywhere. You will get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate between the two currencies varies daily but some places have a set rate posted. We recommend you do carry some Mexico Pesos with you as there are still business, kiosks and market stands that do not take cards, especially in the towns in and around Cerritos.

ATM machines can be found at the airport, at the nationwide convenience store OXXO and at the banks. We have 2 major Mexican banks in Todos Santos with bank machines as well as two OXXO in El Pescadero and Todos Santos. Most ATM machines dispense Mexican Pesos unless otherwise marked. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate and non-bank ATMs will charge higher fees.

All major credit cards are accepted at most stores and restaurants – VISA and MasterCard are the most widely accepted. American Express is accepted in some stores and restaurants, but VISA and MasterCard are preferred. And don’t forget your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

Cerritos Beach is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes away from the airport. Cerritos is approximately 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Cerritos is 8 minutes from our nearby neighbours of El Pescadero and 15 minutes from Todos Santos. The roads here are generally narrower than the US or Canada.

The roads to Cerritos are safe. There is a four-lane highway from the airport all the way to Todos Santos. Cerritos is found just past km 65. Once you turn into Cerritos its all-fun dirt roads. If you haven’t driven in Mexico before, the best advice we can give is to become a defensive driver. Not all drivers will stop at stop signs. They tend to slow down, look to see if there is opposing traffic and drive through. It is very important to use caution at night, as livestock wanders on the highway. Driving is a bit like organized chaos here.

There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to the Todos Santo/Cerritos highway. If you’re driving, you avoid all the city traffic on the main highway. The cost of the toll is about a $100 pesos one way.

In Mexico speed bumps (or topes) are used as a way of slowing down traffic in towns. Speed bumps are normally marked but in beach towns like Cerritos, be aware speed bumps are usually unmarked or there is no sign, so they are not as easily spotted.

Most major gas stations accept debit or credit card, but they always except cash – USD or Pesos. It is customary to tip 10 pesos. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which means regular or Lleno (ye-no) which means premium. Most gas station attendants will understand terms like “twenty dollars” or “two hundred pesos”. If in doubt, show the attendant the denomination you wish to pay with.

No special licenses are needed here to drive. You will however need a valid driver’s license issued by your country of residence.

We do recommend you rent a car. There are so many amazing places to see, restaurants to try and experiences to have that you will want to have a car. You can rent a car at the Los Cabo Airport (SJD) airport from many of the international car rental agencies, or you can have a car delivered directly to the Cove from Todos Santo or take private transportation to and from the airport.

When renting a car, please know there is a mandatory Mexican Liability Insurance that all Mexican car rental agency must apply to your rental by law. So, expect the checkout price to be higher than the advertised price in most situations.

You can also hire the private car transportation companies for drive and guide day tours or hire them to drive you around Cerritos and its neighborhoods, maybe even take you to an off the beaten path restaurant for an evening of sunsets and cocktails.

Here are a few cars rental and private transport company’s options:

TS Private Transportation
Omega Car Rentals in Todos Santos
Cactus Car Rental

There is also the option of taking a shuttle service through Baja Eco Tours .They run a shuttle from Los Cabos Airport (SJD) to Todos Santos. It’s on a small 7-10 passenger van. Round trip is about $35 USD. You can take a taxi from Todos Santos or ask them to drop you off at their terminal in Pescadero, across from the Pemex, and take a taxi from there.

Google Maps will bring you right to us at The Cove at Cerritos! Please make sure the app is in your phone before leaving home.

We recommend all travelers purchase travel insurance prior to leaving your home country. There are H+ hospitals in both San Jose and Cabo San Lucas that provide full medical service based upon US health care standards.

In Todos Santos there is the Saint Jude’s Medical Centre. They offer full medical and emergency service around the clock every day of the year. They have a certified ambulance in town and is fully equipped and operated by qualified paramedics.

Saint Jude’s Medical Centre in Todos Santos is the only facility in town that takes most international insurances and can find out if yours would cover your needs in minutes. They also work with a network of major hospitals in Cabos San Lucas and La Paz. Their staff speaks English and have the US itemized CPT billing system in case you need it for your insurance. In most cases, you will be expected to pay for any treatment incurred before leaving the hospital and can then file a claim with your insurance provider.

Regarding tipping, there is no expectation that you leave a gratuity. It is your choice, but please know that your generosity is deeply appreciated, not only at eating and drinking places, but most service staff greatly appreciate the kind gesture.

Tipping is deeply engrained into the culture here and giving small a tip is widely practiced for good service. Many employees rely on tips as their main source of income, as salaries are typically very low compared to the US and Canada.

We highly encourage you to purchase travel insurance. It’s important to sort your travel insurance out to truly enjoy your holiday to the fullest and stress-free. Don’t let an unplanned sickness or accident ruin your vacation plans!
